Just Be Careful … Try to Remember to Think …
By admin | August 8, 2008
I run some content sites, listings, directories and things of this nature. It all started just as a hobby, I guess you could say, but it’s grown into quite a chore to keep up with it all.
Consequently, I’m always looking for content … articles, new listings … whatever. In the process I stumbled over this site called Host My Post. They offer articles that you can publish on your site for free … they even offer to pay you some points, which apparently can be converted to cash, but I haven’t gotten that far with their system … which by the way … seems to be a bit clunky, at best … but I digress …
As I was finding articles to submit I was elated and excited. There is a lot of content to be had here. I input some of my sites, and awaited site approval and clearance to begin to put articles up. Ah, new fresh content … YAHOOOOO!
But, as I looked a bit closer, some of these articles were specific to some topics, or categories, that account for a lot of online spam … I looked closer at the link, where these articles linked off to, and found that many were pharmaceutical sites. Well, you could say that my sails hit the water.
I did look further into this and there is a bit of legitimate content there, that won’t get you in trouble by linking to bad neighborhoods … but the point here, of this post, is to catch yourself through the excitement of a new find and really examine it for what it is … save yourself the grief of having to go back and delete some posts because you don’t want to link to a bad neighborhood.

Patented Advice
By admin | August 7, 2008
It came up in conversation in the office today … I wondered why it wasn’t as plain in my mind as this before. I’m talking about the Google Patent.
With the Patent Google is basically trying to say … “this is the way we do things and we don’t want anyone else to do this” … well, if you think about it … they are letting you know how they rank sites!
Well, not completely of course, that would just make life toooo easy.
But to this end, I am going over the Patent and researching it to discover more ways to optimize a website. I’ll be reporting more here … and of course in the Daily SEO Tips email list where I will try to work a good tip from this Patent research into many of the daily tips.
Stay Tuned!

Welcome to Our New Home and Domain
By admin | August 6, 2008
For a long time I have kicked myself in the head for choosing the old domain name. It just wasn’t good. It (seomen.com) was intended to be a play on words, SE Omen … not SEO men … on top of that it sort of sounds, and apparently reminds people of something else, quite different that is synonymous with men at sea.
So I have taken the plunge and I believe this name pretty much exactly sums up this site, except it doesn’t have the keyword course or training in it, and we are an SEO training course. I still think this is a much improved domain name.
Stay tuned for a huge push forward with this site as it is becoming more and more my main business focus.

Well … I Got Hacked … Damn Dirty Apes
By admin | July 23, 2008
If you had been here before to visit, you may have realized that my blog just disappeared.
Well, back when that last big update for WordPress came along … well, I guess I hesitated in upgrading for a little while. The upgrade, it turns out, was to plug a hole where dirtbags could hack your site. So, you guessed it … my site disappeared.
Well, it’s back now … I spent some considerable time extracting the posts out of the database, and then re-inputting everything here.
It’s good to be back and I have LOTS to tell you … Yahoo … read on!

What are your neighbors doing?
By admin | April 16, 2008
I remember an old saying about having what the neighbors have, or doing better than the neighbors. Having more than the Smith’s do, or some such phrase like that.
This is where site analysis comes into play. From time to time throughout a campaign I set aside time to look over all the reports and data that I can find.
I compare my client’s listings and site to the sites ranking in the Top-5 for any given keyword. I then make note of what they have that we don’t, and make changes to the site to tweak us up in the listings.
This isn’t a foolproof method to just do better than the competition, but a base to make improvements on.
Google scores a site on many factors (over 100 items), and it is the interaction between all these items that makes a site rise in the listings. It’s not just a matter of having one more inbound link, or one more H1 tag … it’s a creative combination of on-site and off-site SEO techniques.
Analyze your competition and be one step closer to rising above them.
Learn to do better than your neighbors!

Have you ever had to change coded type on a page into CSS, or just want to change the “size” command to a px size in CSS?
Well, that can be quite a chore, hit or miss will put you into a situation where you could spend all day changing point or pixel sizes.
Here is a chart that can eliminate a lot of this hassle with a simple comparison of point sizes next to pixel sizes next to H tag sizes next to regular standard font sizes.
Have a look and be sure to bookmark the page … someday you are going to want to use this!

A Website is Never Complete
By admin | March 26, 2008
Keep this fact in mind.
A typical business website is one day built and then, basically, left alone. Most business owners have a tendency to think of their web presence to be more or less like a business card. You need to have one and people can have your contact information via it. But your web presence is more than that, much, much more than that.
Get rid of the idea that once you have your website built, or created, it is done. Your site can’t ever be done. You need to constantly expand on the content of your site. Whether you ever get involved in SEO for your site or not, whether you ever do any marketing of your site or not, whether you ever run a PPC campaign, you need to keep your site fresh and new.
There are two basic reasons why. First, for the engines who want to see fresh active sites. Two to provide your users or visitors with more and more information. Timely information is even better. This is one reason why blogs are so successful. They are generally timely, and often in response to timely subjects or news.
So put yourself on some sort of schedule. Make yourself add a new page to your site every week, or month. Make yourself expand on some pages of your site every week. Adding a paragraph a week to your site will have a positive impact on the engines. They’ll keep coming back for more as long as you provide it!

Plain and Simple … Bottom Line Says … Content is King
By admin | March 18, 2008
I know you have more than likely heard it before. You’ll hear it again too. And you are hearing it right now from me.
When all the linking is done. When all the code attributes are done. When all the keyword density is done. When all the title tags, meta tags, whosadingy tags and all the other basic stuff are done … the bottom line is going to be the content you have on your site.
It certainly does help to have all your ducks in a row, but you need to have something that will keep people there, and bring them back. Think of yourself, and your own surfing habits. When you arrive at a site it doesn’t take long to decide if you are where you want to be, or not. How often do you simply click the back button and go for another result from the SERP?
Well, normal people do it all the time. So, you need to grab their attention right away. Provide something good, easily viewed, and right \”in their face\” so you can get a hook into them right away.
Keep this philosophy up throughout the site. Keep providing your visitors with whatever it takes to keep their curiosity up. To keep their attention. And most of all … to feed them the information, not only that they need, but what they need to know.
